The old masters of art history left behind an awe-inspiring wealth of images, Bruneau found. For him, it was clear that as a young artist, you didn't have to search for new images. You could reuse those images, interpret them, and process them into your own work. 'And so Bruneau, in the best tradition of postmodernism, seems to make light-hearted drawing with a heavy wink,' wrote critic Marc Ruyters. 'Nothing could be further from the truth. What Bruneau makes is pregnant with sadness, with discomfort for a world that has itself become a caricature. Bruneau doesn't paint because it's fun to paint, he does it because he has to.'
13 businesses located on Wolstraat are presenting a work by visual artist Bruneau in their windows throughout the month of February. Through QR stickers on the windows, you can access 13 short texts, each sketching a fragment of Bruneau's work. Together, they provide a brief insight into his oeuvre.
