During the years 1988-89, Bruneau drew attention with a notable series of writers' portraits. At the 'Het Andere Boek' fair in Ghent, his exhibition 'Overbooking' was a real eye-catcher. Bruneau showed 32 portraits, drawn minimalistically with simple lines that spoke of great accuracy. Portraits of, among others, Defoe, Mishima, Gerard Reve, Oscar Wilde, Apollinaire, Lord Byron, James Joyce, Beckett, and Baudelaire were included in the series. After 'Het Andere Boek', the portraits traveled to the M HKA, Antwerp, De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam, Eriks Belgium NV, Antwerp, Kunstverein Schwerte E.V., Schwerte, and Wilkov Goldfeder Gallery, New York.
