A characteristic of Bruneau's drawings is the simple and sharp contouring. The clear lines that reveal both spontaneity and a steady hand. Once the subject was captured, the drawings were put on paper very quickly. Bruneau was unstoppable in his creative urge. A wonderful eruption of sharp observations. Fresh and attractive in color and visual execution. It was calculated that Bruneau drew and painted over 30,000 works. His drawings are imbued with irony and a playful touch; no heaviness is ever to be detected. Striking is the warmth and affection with which he shaped the world visually. On the occasion of the exhibition Overbooking (1988), Jan Ceuleers wrote to Dorian Van Der Brempt: 'Bruneau's work doesn't need explaining. His evident enthusiasm is to be taken or left. He uses art history as stowaways use ships. He is not an epigone, but a carefree pragmatist and nomad. His oeuvre does not fit into the framework of poor, illusory innovation. It is eloquent and abundant. And above all: sufficiently ambiguous. You cannot reduce this work to comics, illustrations, caricature... With every stroke of the pen, the world becomes Bruneau's world.'
